Sorry about it taking so long, but due to real-life concerns (ie: loosing net access for about 2 months) the production of the paper had to be delayed a little while. Made it back in time for Christmas though, so this issue will have a couple special sections devoted to the holiday season. In mud news, there's more moving and shaking in the Wizard community. A record number of new wizards have ascended from the ranks of mortality, and a horde of new projects are in the works. Some new things to look forward to are the Eldar, an elf-based society, the soon to be unveiled PK society (for those of you who want to exercise your more bloodthirsty tendencies), and the new and improved mages class. There's also been a considerable number of new areas and items released since the last issue, including the Body Shop where you can get rid of those ugly scars, the Burnham wood area (soon to have a quest addition), two new classes (the necromancer and ranger) and a new guild. Due to the overwhelming response on the part of the members of AA, we now have nearly enough to buy a new machine and move our site to a location in North America, which should be great news to you people on that continent. (I am one, and I sure am happy about it... no more trans-atlantic lag! yay! =) Because of this community owned machine, however, a new method of running the mud must be established. More information about this new order and the people involved in it is contained in an interview with Zor, later in this issue. By popular demand, this issue will include another section describing the greater features and whereabouts of the larger areas on the surface of AA. However, due to the limited time that I've had to release this issue, some of the information there may be slightly off the mark. This list will be printed, and periodically updated, in every Canticle from this issue on. A Merry Christmas, Happy Chanuka, Jolie Noel, Merry Solstice and general happy ho-ho to everyone out there in AA land, from myself and everyone here at the Canticle! - Hatamoto, CE Canticle ______________________________________________________________________________ In this issue: | Zor Interview..................... 6 | Editorials........................ 2 Areas List........................ 22 | Christmas Special Greetings....... 5 Sports/Obituaries................. 12 | Social Events..................... 9 Classifieds....................... 15 | Business Classifieds.............. 16 _______________________________________|______________________________________ ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Volume 1.3 Virrsmonth 17, 505 Page 2 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Canticle welcomes your comments and retorts to what we print, and we shall willingly print any editorial submitted for inclusion in the paper. Please send it IMS mail to Hatamoto, or write it on the Submissions Cat Board located in the Canticle offices, currently just outside the west gate in the main village. Dear Editor, In issue 1.3 of the Canticle, it was said that we have too many Wizards flying around. I think this opinion is right. There might be too many people who can't (or don't) honor the advantage of being immortal. But how do you think will another big quest solve this problem? I guess there will be fewer Wizards because of this, but really better ones? I don't think so. Maybe you can sort some guys out who shouldn't be Wizards, but you shouldn't sort out some of the others, too. I can only speak for myself, okay, but I am really interested in becoming a Wizard; I am interested in codifying, so I think, I may be an enrichment of AA (not objective maybe :-). But I am really NOT interested in solving quests... it's boring to stand somewhere for hours and days and imagine about this problem... just to finally recognize you are not strong enough to solve it. No thanks. I WILL solve all these quests some time; but most of my time I just want to relax without thinking about major problems; that's why I am here. So: If you want to have more time, cut the advantages of being Wizard, higher necessary xps, don't let them start to codify till they learned something about it and demonstrated. But - please - don't make another big quest... Garkin [Editor's reply] Your point is well made... just because someone is smart enough or tenacious enough to hack at a quest until it is done does NOT mean that he or she is a suitable candidate for Wiz-ship. The reason the quests were used as a 'gauntlet' to run to becoming a Wizard was to see who REALLY wanted to become one, and not just people who have a "well, it'd be cool to piddle around for a while" type attitude. Unfortunately (in your case) there are already a bevy of quests coming SOON to an area near you. Which, ironically, is caused by a great many people graduating to Wizardship due to the lack of challenging quests to weed out the 'wannabe' wizards. This is not to say that we don't have a crop of excellent new up'n'coming Wizards that are codin' their butts off and coming up with really cool stuff, but there are again as many who don't really do much of anything. However, installed since the last issue is a new 'educational system', which requires a newbie Wiz to prove their coding talents by designing a monster, a room, an weapon and a treasure before being sponsored by an open-area wizard. A few wizards have yet to pass this trial (and indeed, some level 21ers should be dumped back to level 20 and forced to go thru the educational system!), so it has been somewhat successful, at least to train some of the newbies with some basic minimums needed for a productive wizship. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Volume 1.3 Virrsmonth 17, 505 Page 3 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- &%@!&#*! I want something done, or the canticle will bear the full brunt of the effects of THE WRATH OF WRATH!! If nothing is forthwith, and i am not satisfied with the result, then my lawyers will contact you shortly. - An outraged Wrath, who doesn't like his name to be rubbed in - the dirt because of SOMEONE ELSE'S spelling mistake.. [Editor's Reply] Okay, okay, don't get yer wizzly Fruit of the Looms in a square knot... mistakes happen and, unfortunately, I cannot catch every tiny mistake. One area I particularly depend on accuracy from my assistants is the Obituaries/Sports section (the section in question) because I simply do NOT have the time to cross-reference the entries to those of the kill logs. The Canticle acknowledges its error, the wizard in question was indeed WRAITH, and not Wrath as printed, and the person responsible for the error has been shot. Of course, he's immortal, so it didn't do much, but we had fun doing it anyways. =) ------------------------------------------------------- | ---<---<@ ~ The Flower Shop ~ ---<---<@ | | | | We have a wide assortment of beautiful, fragrant | | flowers, a nice present for that special someone. | | A card comes with each flower, to convey the | | message that will mean so much. | | | | We have roses a-plenty, the perfect gift for a | | good friend or loved one this holiday season. | | Come down and see our shop, just south of the | | Ancient Bliss Inn in Nepeth. | | | | *->- The flower girls | ------------------------------------------------------- ___________________________________ | | | Special someone in your mud-life? | | In the mood for something funny? | _________________|___________________________________|____________________ | | | If you answered yes to one of these questions, or even if you said no to | | both, just bring 50 coins or more to the reception room of the Ancient | | Bliss Inn located in Nepeth. The disaster will erupt soon if we don't get ready to hit back. The officials are still trying to cover up the facts: Admirers of the dark side increase all around our cities. These guys spoil the streets, prowl the villages, make our children feel insecure. The powerful organization - rumors tell us about the admission even of Orcs! - make the respectable people the promise of more and harder fights. Their members - by hearsay - have to prove their nasty character first, a secret connection is beginning to grow then: They are said to inform each other by a magic line - the founders of The Scythe transferred mysterious powers to their followers. No, this challenge is getting more than an exercise for us: All good men AND women are asked for the hit-back of this threat. First of all the Knights - who took an oath to be chivalrous - must turn to serious enmity against the Scythe. No more friendship between Knights and Scythe should be allowed - just for freeing Scythes from the vicious circle of depravity may contact be legal. But there is one important: It is NOW time to realize the danger. There is no time to handle this as a joke anymore. It is a disease, which the officials are not able or ready to recognize yet. Now it is established: If we don't start to fight we will be reading here very soon The Good in our hearts died after a long illness. Canticle: So tell me how you ever get involved in MUDing? Zor : A friend of mine, Farmer, showed me Loch Ness quite a while ago. I heard rumors that there is a game that makes you addicted and I wouldn't believe them. Well, I sure do now. C: Whatever drove you to setup and administer a mud of this quality and size? Z: After having been a wizard on Loch Ness for a while, I started playing on a testmud. Drake's testmud to be more precise. He ran it to be able to code locally as he has been wizard on Nemesis. Don't ask me why I had the idea to play a testmud, which is basically a VERY stupid thing to do. C: How did AA come to be? Who had the original idea for it, what did you think would happen, and who were the first people to work on it? Z: When I wizzed on the testmud, I mailed Drake and asked about the machine etc and we decided on making our own mud. Of course you can't predict how large or successful a mud will become, but I'm really confident about the result, which was only possible with the effort of a lot of great people. You can get a list of those by typing 'help credits'... ;) C: What other MUDs inspired it? Z: I for myself would say Loch Ness and World of Mizar. Playing a mud like Mizar while being a wizard for quite some time on Loch Ness showed me that there are better things than Loch Ness. This was probably my motivation to start a mud. I also met Biko there. C: What things did you do to make AA unique from other MUDs you seen/played on? Z: There have been the standard LPmuds and there have been some extremely expanded LPmuds with a lot of features etc. We always wanted to combine those two worlds. We wanted some things to remain and we wanted to advance some things. One thing is that we want our areas to be unique. This hasn't been standard when we started. Thus we didn't use some standard castles like Angmar's or Padrone's walking castle. Also, we didn't want HUGE areas that aren't described nicely, but rather quality. And I have to say that I have great respect for people that have an open area on Ancient Anguish. ...I'm not sure whether I would have succeeded.. ;)) C: What is your favorite thing about being 'God' on AA? Z: To be able to balance the powers and veto certain developments. C: What is the thing that bugs you the most about it? Z: People that come whining and mostly people that think they are special and wanted to be treated special. [Continued on page 7] ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Volume 1.3 Virrsmonth 17, 505 Page 7 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- [Insights - An interview with Zor (cont from page 6)] C: About how much time do you devote to AA per week? Has it ever overwhelmed you? Z: I don't think I'm able to answer this. I'm trying to cut it down and I think I'll be able to lower it to about 10 hours a week. Has it overwhelmed me? Yeah, there was a time where I used to play approx. 8 hours a day for about 5 months ;) C: How old is AA, and when did it get started? Z: We started coding Friday January 10 1992 and we opened it at February 2 1992 the day before I had to leave for my military service. C: Not to beat a dead horse even further, but for clarification, can you explain why we have to do the donation drive? You mention somewhere that we are costing ETHZ 10000$US a day. Z: Well, I have been talking with a net admin here a long time ago and he stated that our mud wasn't a great stress for the network. But some weeks ago the net admins heard that the university has to pay per megabyte for packages to foreign sites. And with our net traffic it was about $10,000 a month! I think it's clear that this isn't bearable. I know it's not handled this way with most universities, but heck... C: What did you think of the donation drive? Has it gone better or worse than you expected? Z: Better. I'm happy that the players care much about Ancient Anguish and that they have been able to donate. C: The drive really kicked in big when we found out that AA was losing it's site... but that's been about a month since we heard that, and we have been able to continue at the same site while raising funds. Why were we allowed to stay? Z: *XSHRUG* I mailed the net admin about when we have to shut down AA and I never got an answer. It has been clear that we'll have to shutdown though. I just didn't know WHEN and I still don't. I guess we are using less net traffic and thus cost less, due to the access restriction. C: I've heard rumors AA might be moved to the US..where will the new computer be located? Z: Yes, AA will be moved to the states. We already have a net connection, but I'd prefer to not telling it yet. Maybe you find out anyway ;) C: For our readers and for the record: what kind of machine is Ancient Anguish running on right now, and what kind of resources do we use on that machine? Z: We are currently running on a Sun SPARCStation 10 and we use about 16-20 megabytes of RAM and about 200 megabytes of disk space. C: What type of computer are we getting? Z: I asked Amante to take care of that. I don't know the prices in the states. [Continued on page 8] ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Volume 1.3 Virrsmonth 17, 505 Page 8 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- [Insights - An interview with Zor (cont from page 7)] C: In practical terms, what does the move mean? How many players at a time will be able to log in? Z: I think we'll be able to run with 70 players at least. But I guess we'll see ;) C: What will be different in terms of what mortals can expect? Will we have less lag, will the system crash less often? Z: We should have less lag. There won't be any other work done on the machine. The crashes don't depend on the machine, really. Of course there won't be any 'unknown' who can switch off the machine before going home ;) [Editors Note - Due to the fact that the machine will be local to North America, the trans-atlantic connection will be removed, which will cure a LOT of lag.] C: What sort of problems do you foresee with the new machine? Z: I don't know. But anyone that has worked with computers knows that there will probably be some.. ;) C: Who will own the machine that we will purchase? Z: That's a difficult question and I don't know the laws in the states. Basically, all that have donated own the machine to the part of their investment. But practically, Amante will take care of it and make sure that AA has a future on this machine. The machine won't be used for anything else. I want to say here that I have full trust in Amante. C: Rumor has it that you and Drake will retire as Gods, and that a new MudGovernment will be implemented. Could you please provide a little more detail, for out mortal readers? Z: Yes, that's true. There won't be any god status anymore. There will, however be an 'Ancient Anguish Law' [AAL] which will deal with all basic problems and which will also determine the competences. At the top of the hierarchy there will be the Arch Wizards, followed by the Senators. The Arch Wizards have full competences in their task and nobody can directly interfere. They have to follow the AAL though! And that's where the Senate will have powers, because only the Senate can change the AAL. The Senate will also control the Arch Wizards, not each of their actions, but whether they abuse their power. Everyone will be able to read the AAL soon. C: What sort of role do you intend to play the morning after we move to the new site? A: As soon as the new hierarchy is implemented, I will be a Senator. C: Is there anything you'd like to tell the Canticle's readers? Z: Yes, thanx for making AA what it is! Thanks Zor! See you in Seattle! For those of you interested, the great AA coming to America tour featuring Zor is scheduled for February 1994, with stops in various U.S. cities. While the fight scenes got tiresome (Especially after some actors ran offstage to get more potions...) the dramatical debut of this acting company is a most promising one. In fact, not since John Barrymore's 1991 production of "Troius and Cressida" on NannyMUD have I seen such emotion on the virtual stage. Chloe? Aditu told me she would be right back, which didnt prove the case; The fight went on for nearly 2 hours with Zodiaco and Aditu running around, leaving bloodtrails all over the realm, constantly bonecrushing each other. Sabi provided Zodiaco with potions, and Nathaniel likewise for Aditu. I remember Zodiaco complaining about this fight costing him too much money. This battle had a rather interesting ending: Zodiaco realized he was not going to win this fight so he arranged for Sabi to kill him, and collect his bounty. Afterwards he would let Aditu kill him (again!) and get her arrested for murder, because Zodiaco would no longer be on the wanted list, after Sabi already collecting his bounty. Drogumar(3) also had some fun this sunny day, after getting really drunk on beer from the pub he ran off to slay someone small, Elbereth(1). Elbereth didn't like this a single bit and got his friend, Avenger(14), to whack the drunkard. Drogumar didn't remember a thing the next day, except for some faint impressions of him making moves on some big, dark hooded girl. << December 10th 1993 >> Guest was being particularly annoying in the church today, so Blackmoon(10) provided Guest with 'Spectral Platemail' to wear, and then threw the poor thing in the ocean. Spiritus(1) also had some trouble today, first getting eaten alive by Musashi(22), then directly after being reincarnated forced to kill himself... and some of you are complaining about lag! Leaf(8) our great avenger, protector of the weak, had a pained expression after a poker game with Tatanka(17). Rumor has it Tatanka was loosing badly at a poker game with Leaf, and when he was completely out of chips he beheaded Leaf (who was still sitting in his chair drinking slop), got his chips back and collected the bounty. The moral? -* Always let the bigger guy win *- << December 11th 1993 >> This was a day of some massive smashing, Hugh(19), Steel(19), Nypd(18), Tonto(18) and Tatanka(17) had a go at each other. The massive clash ended in Hugh(19) landing a lethal blow to Tatanka(17). Reports say all newbies were hiding in the church when all this went on, probably a wise move because AA wasn't really a safe place this saturday. [Continued on page 14] ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Volume 1.3 Virrsmonth 17, 505 Page 14 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- [Sports/Obituaries - Continued from page 13] << December 12th 1993 >> The Scythe were really bored this day, so Wolfen(13), Cortez(14) and Madaxeman(10) went out for some excitement, and someone to to eat. They probably agreed Tatanka(17) hadn't got enough of beating yesterday and swiftly put him to rest in no more than 10 seconds. Wolfen(14) and Cortez(15) were probably still bored because they hammered unsuspecting Erb(11) on their way back to scythe HQ. Friends are still picking up the pieces of Erb, I hear. As if this was not enough, the scythe duo ambushed Tonto(18) an hour later. The high level thief made great sport of dodging their puny assaults. The bloody sunday ended with poor Vd(1) getting killed by Majik(2), after being attacked not less than twelve times. Additional note: " Digestive(1) asked me (Dimenser(21)) to summon him. When he appeared in the purple cloud, he jumped for me. I could not do anything but defend myself, resulting in the death of my attacker. I still have no clue who he was, or what his motives were. I fear someone wants to see me dead. " << December 14th 1993 >> "If you are gonna do someone in, do it properly." That thought probably went through Taryn's(16) mind when she asked Tonto(19) to join in. People are still scraping up what is left of Ratlhead(1). Also, the Scythe orc Hugh(19) showed no mercy to Deth(14), blowing him to smithereens in no less than ten seconds. Deth is recovering rather well from the assault, already taking short trips outside the church. Our friend Countzero(4) ended the day by killing Fingolas(1) not once, but twice, waiting outside the church to put the dagger into poor reincarnated Fingolas. "On receiving an interrupt, decrement Fingolas hps to zero". I guess he got caught in a loop. << December 16th 1993 >> Always friendly Shell(1) and Spam(1) were out on a nice picnic when the Scythe warrior Smegmaman(15) jumped down from a tree and brutally slayed Spam, with Shell fleeing from the scene in panic. Spam is still undergoing surgery, and Shell still paying regular visits to a psychiatrist. << December 17th 1993 >> Vivian(2) killed Stanley(1). The pictures from the battle are very shaky, so I cant make much out of it, except that Vivian seemed pretty pissed. First smashing all sense out of poor Stanley and then having a go at my magic videocamera, nearly destroying all documentation. <<------------------>> - For all you sport fanatics out there, Lord Macheolor Nightshade (who edited the previous (truly magical) sports section) had to leave for xmas, so I did the honors for this minisection. / Dimenser. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Volume 1.3 Virrsmonth 17, 505 Page 15 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- _____________________________________________________________________________ | ____ ____ ____ ____ ____ ____ ____ ____ ___ ____ | | The Canticle / / // / / / / / / | / | | / / /___//____ /____ / /__ / /__ / //____ | | / / / / / / / / / / / / / | | / / / / / / / / / / / / / | | /___ /___ / / ____/ ____/__/_ / __/_ /___ /____/ ____/ | |_____________________________________________________________________________| |_____________________________________________________________________________| | | | | | Single male elf, experienced | A haiku - By Lylaa | Tanzath is avail. | | in fight, marvelous singer | At night before I sleep | for rental by hour | | and good cook seeks single | My skin says goodnight | or day. Deputy Tigress the LawBabe. 2) Are you married or single on the mud? Are you looking? ;) I am happily married to my arch angel, Saerdan. Until death do us part. I am not looking for a replacement or for an affair. Married characters who cheat on their spouses sicken me. Perhaps I view mud marriage seriously since RL feelings are often involved. If you want to play around - STAY SINGLE! Otherwise, honor your marriage vows or obtain a divorce from your local wizard immediately. 3) As a Wiz do you have any future plans or goals? My very first area, Anasazi: The Ancient Ones, is going through the QC process as of this writing. I spent a considerable amount of time on this area and am anxious to see it become part of AA. I am also thinking about coding an area for newbies. When I was mortal, I frequently found that the NPCs in the manor had all been killed and had difficulty finding a suitable kill. I would like to code an area specifically for newbies and prohibit players over a certain level from entering the area. 4) Could you please describe to us how your picture your character, in your minds eye. As my name implies, I am a female tiger. I have large brown eyes with long black eyelashes, and soft tawny fur with black stripes. My teeth and claws are quite sharp. My long tail wags a lot since my husband makes me so very happy. I am normally as gentle as a pussy cat. However, I easily transform into the cat from hell when I am angry. I have been known to rip people to shreds. I once considered being declawed after my marriage to Saerdan. However, my claws are needed for self defense. I find them to be quite useful at times. *grin* 5) Could you please give us a brief history of your character. Where is she from, etc. I come from the jungle called life. I am centuries old. I saw the creation of the earth and the heavens and have visions of things to come in the future. If I were to reveal all that I have seen, you would no doubt label me insane. I found the Scythe Guild to be most suitable for me. A tiger is the only animal born without the instinct to kill. Therefore, I had to find someone to teach me the fine art of survival. Since I was orphaned as a young child, my mother was unable to teach me how to kill and maintain my existence. The Scythers are renowned killers. Since I wanted the best training available, I elected to join a guild that would be beneficial to me and my survival. I am proud to be a Scyther! Could you imagine me as a knight or a monk? Quite inappropriate, I would say! [continued on page 21] ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Volume 1.3 Virrsmonth 17, 505 Page 21 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- [Bios - Tigress, continued from page 20] 6) What are your likes and dislikes. Pet peeves and quirks. I despise players who login here and spend the majority of their time causing problems. For example: players who PK for fun and who steal from newbies are at the top of my list. I also dislike players who continue to whine and complain about Law here on AA. Law is a necessary evil. I think we all got a taste of how horrible AA would be without Law when the entire team quit last week. Playerkilling, stealing, and cheating was at an all time high. I feel that if someone has a legitimate complaint or problem, they should air it and try to get it resolved. I prefer to be confronted when I have offended someone rather than be talked about behind my back. A real warrior confronts the enemy and does not run away! Last, but not least, I dislike aged wizards who have done nothing in the way of contributing to AA by coding areas. I would be bored to tears without my code and Law work! I think that if a wizard is unable or unwilling to code, their sponsors should remove their sponsorship and demote them to level 20. You can post on boards and chat at level 20 as easily as you can at level 21. Deputy Tigress the LawBabe *8^) *** A new driver for Ancient Anguish! *** I'm sure many of you have heard some talk about the new driver for Ancient Anguish, but few of you actually understand what this will mean to YOU, John Q. Mortal. As many of you are aware, Ancient Anguish is run on FIVE separate computers, which are kept mobile at all times in Zor's 1979 Dodge Ram (Metallic Blue). For the past year and a half, the MUDmobile has been kept in constant motion (to allow a constant satellite feed to non-European areas) by our beloved driver, J. Alfred Prufrock. Al is now retiring to Finland to "civilize the natives"... Go get 'em, Al! That brings us to our new driver, Hank Amylaar. Mr. Amylaar has had a rough time adjusting (including hitting a nasty pothole in Milan which cost us Hobbitat), but we are assured that he won't get caught in traffic (causing unwanted "lag") as much in the future. One additional note, your donation dollars would be greatly appreciated. So far, we collected almost all of the amount needed to purchase a 1993 Ford Aerostar (the main asset being a larger gas tank, ergo less frequent reboots.) [note: In which case, we will be raffling off the old van. See Saint for details.] Please donate, and if you ever happen to be in Switzerland, come by and welcome in our new driver. He might even give you a spin, if you ask nice.
