A Role-Players' Society?

Update 14.1. 2003:
The coder for the guild was away on leave, and there was little progress with the code. I haven't lost hope on that yet, but on the other hand RpWiki is no longer quite under my control. It'll work for an undetermined length of time, but to touch the admin side will require me to jump through hoops.
Update 17.9. 2001:
There is actually a Storyweaver's guild under the works. Once that's in the game, finding supporting code for role-playing shouldn't be a problem anymore. (I'm requesting a little 'sticky' item be made available to non-guild members as well.)
Update 11.2. 00:40:
Eivind and I set up a RpWiki. This started as an impulse and ended up as a 'hey, let's do it anyway'. Well, when I say 'set up', I don't really mean properly set up. The base html needs some adjusting, for instance. The colours and such, in other words, are waiting for a public opinion. Except I use my at least double-sized vote to state that it /will/ not have a full-black blackground with white/red text, that's too depressing. ;) Something neutral (mild background images are quite possible too) would be nice. Here is a nice example of WikiWebs, with lots of FAQ and such information. We'll presumably have to make an orderly collection of how-to-use helps on this site too, sooner or later.
10.2. night:
There was discussion on the Suggestion board about a need for role-players to identify eachothers (to avoid awkward situations when you're the only one doing it, for one) and related matters. Maybe there could be a role-players' society, similar in base workings to SK or Geo? A board for in-character messages was wished for, as was some way of identification. I posted this note (with a few more typos ;)), which also made me create the page:

Title: 'Third try: Role-playing identifiers' // Fir <16> Sat Feb 10
21:11:28 2001

(Begone, O Lag! Reset not my connection, peer! May my lines wrap as intended
and may the typos be noticed before hitting enter! Third try.)
Role-playing is nice. It seems that people've been missing two things
here, an identifier: This person role-plays, and a message forum where the
writings would be set in-character. While it would be nice to have code in
the mud for backing these up - and there's probably going to be a nice
wizard with a good implementation idea sooner or later - I don't think
anything is stopping us from identifying ourselves by the means we /do/
have:
* Some easy-to-get but perhaps rather unuseful an item, and a deal:
'People carrying pebbles are members of the RP society.' *g*
(Unusefulness helps against misunderstandings. 'Oh, sorry, I didn't know
  you were /using/ that whip..')
* Session messages. I'm sure we could sacrifice two-three-four letters
from our session to say #RP# or some other pre-decided code.
* For donators, the advanced description may contain a notice of it.
* A web-based list of people who announce their characters to be available
  for RP might help too.

I think such a society can be started here and now. We can ask for wizard
help, but it's not fatal if we don't have an official society /tomorrow/,
even though admittedly it effects getting a message board in-game.

I was thinking I could, for instance, poke away space from my homepages
for anything web-based we might have use for; a specialized version of my
guestbook code might serve the purposes of messaging boards and/or
character name submission engine unless there's someone capable of coding
something more graceful (I'm not, I need Eivind's help with practically
sneezing in the general direction of the code).

Or then again it might be better to get an account somewhere else, so we
can have a few people have access to the thing so life doesn't get bogged
down if the site 'owner' is real-life lagged.

So. People, citizens, role players! Please stuff comments to my e- or
mudmail addresses (also, let me know if I can use your address for
impersonal mass-mailings like 'status of project'), since I don't read the
board daily or even weekly. I bet I can also bribe Erin into sneaking an
ad in the Canticle once we've gotten started (and the current issue is still
making an attempt of coming out)..

For later reference, I'll try to put up a page tonight:
http://www.nettilinja.fi/~asimov/roles.html (will be linked to from the
main page as well).

--Fir had this thought (and had it again and again and again.. submit!)

End of note number 250.

Things we (might) need web-wise:

Outside of that, I think we mostly need people. And being able to get the attention of other people with the same problem. Once some set of pages is up, we can submit it to be a Player Page and hope for the best, and the Yellow Pages (Fluiddruid), for instance, will be a likely help.

My head has been rather sufficiently emptied now. More ideas? Drop me email (fir at iki dot fi) or mudmail, as said above. I need at least one 'that might work' comment to get properly started. (Even us idea-voicers need positive feedback, you know. ;))
