Many thanks to Kaslind, Meriadoc, Linty, Thorn, Alisyia, Dynamo, JabberJaws, Gustav and Paldin, who have provided material for this issue. I have just returned from a business trip to the fine village of Norton. My original intention was to briefly look for possible funding for our fine paper, but the surprisingly many activities available in there simply swept me away. I also spent an extra week recovering from a nasty flu I caught after falling into one of those chilly northern rivers. Speaking of funding, I must unfortunately advise you against making donations to Erin in our offices for the time being. There are odd rumours going on about the money not getting through the system as it should. I will be having a palaver with Erin about this as soon as possible, but she has been having the bad time of month for a few weeks now (maybe it is an elven thing) and is somewhat touchy to anything which might sound like criticism of her work... -- Thaddeus Editor-in-Chief The Canticle *-------------------------------------------------------------------------* <*> CANTICLE INDEX <*> -------------------------------------+------------------------------------- Bugs and Maggots...................2 You Know You Are Addicted to AA...10 Local News.........................3 Mortal Council News...............11 King Outlaws Whiteleaf.............7 Haiku Time........................15 News in Brief......................8 The Classifieds...................16 The Shifter Conundrum..............9 --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Volume 7.0 10 Ansmonth, 559 Page 2 --------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Wonderful World of Bugs and Maggots by Fir, the Amateur Centipede Catcher of the House of Amros. Have you been sighting these small friends of ours lately? Have you gotten disappointed by no one reacting to an extraordinary find you've made and reported? There are four commands you want to know: bug, typo, idea and praise. Try 'help <command>' for more information on each. One thing to notice about these commands is that they store your report in the log of the area you're in, so if you have found a bug in your class and report it by using 'bug' while sitting in the Canticle Offices, it will end up logged as a Canticle bug and, depending on how often that particular bug log is checked, it might take months before the wizard behind the class code will even hear about the bug. Each bug (and other report) automatically knows exactly what room you were in when you reported it, so you do not need to describe that. Your name is also stored with the report. Wizards get informed when they log in if they have new bugs or typos in their logs. There is an exception to this: unfortunately, large projects which have been coded by multiple wizards do not inform their coders of new bug logs to look at. What about areas whose coders are inactive, bugs in items whose origin you do not know and all other possible shortcomings of the reporting commands? You may have already found the Bug and Suggestions boards, and possibly even found out about the new Praise board. Posting your report on these has the advantage that more people will read it, including people who have the necessary powers to go fix bugs in someone else's code. It also helps other bug reporters to find out if the bug they found has been posted about already. (It is possible to search most of the boards, including the Bug and Suggestions boards, on the web - http://www.anguish.org/aasearch.html is the place to look. It does not seem to be automatically updated, however.) On the other hand, once a wizard sits down to fix bugs in an area, it takes little additional effort to browse the bug log for other reported problems, while browsing the boards for old bug reports might not be so popular. Both approaches have their good sides. If you want to be certain, you might even use both. In either case, your reports are appreciated in general, and especially so if they reach the right people. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Volume 7.0 10 Ansmonth, 559 Page 3 --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Puffy the Tobaccionist Plans Nerve Vacation Puffy, the shopkeeper of the Tobacco Shop in Neville, has been planning a little nerve vacation to get away from his work stress for a while. But is being a shopkeeper really that stressful? It is, according to Puffy: "Almost everyone wants Hobbitat Gold! And when I run out - my providers can't supply infinite amounts a day, you know - people get furious! They show no understanding of the problems of a poor shopkeeper, and some have even physically attacked me!" That's right, good readers, being out of stock has more than once gotten poor Puffy beaten before the watchmen have time to react. What is even worse is that many people think this is a natural part of the job! Undeadguy commented: "Well, if he is going to sell a product as popular as everyone professes, then perhaps a certain stock level that would make sense to the current demand is necessary. If he fails to meet that certain need amidst still advertising that product, then perhaps said Tobacconist deserves everything that occurs." What is this? Normal customers do not tend to get this aggressive! Is there something in common with the famous Hobbitat beer and the fights the local pub is well known for and the tobacco? Is there some secret ingredient in Hobbitat Gold making its long-time users get feral from withdrawal? Matters get worse, as a remark by Sic shows: "If you're going to challenge Scythe dominance of anything, whether it be smokeables, or territory, you better watch your back." It turns out Kzoaki is not very appreciative of Puffy's competition and his warnings against buying possibly greenleaf-spiced tobacco from the Scythe seller. It is unclear if the Scythe might have anything to do with Puffy's customers' sudden fits of rage, but Puffy comments he wouldn't be too surprised if Kzoaki were up to something wicked as well. The Canticle has also noticed how smoking seems to make people more aggressive - most smokers seem to be either on their way to kill something or recovering from a fight. Even then, you wouldn't have thought being a tobacco seller would be this dangerous a job. The Canticle Staff can possibly recommend a nice vacationing place for Puffy, as Erin has much experience on nerve vacations. (She at least keeps planning them all the time.) --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Volume 7.0 10 Ansmonth, 559 Page 4 --------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Loss and Restoration of Relative Normality You might have experienced some odd memory failure during a period some time ago, not being able to recall what you were doing for a whole week or more. The Canticle found out from the Arch of Internal Workings of the World, Arpeggio, that that was probably caused by "some problem with the disk drives, but everything seems to be operating normally again". We were so thoroughly baffled by these words of wisdom that we had to go ask Oterim the sage in Neville to interpret them for us. He called this "very disturbing news". "Disk drives are the natural force affecting just about everything - seasons, night and day and so on," told Oterim, member of the Pancake- Shaped Oerthe Club. "If something goes wrong with them, horrible things could happen, volcanoes could erupt, and the weather could get downright cleared up!" What, no more double and triple sunrises either? That *is* bad news. "We have all been very all lucky that Arpeggio managed to fix the problem in time," the sage finished. Necromancers And Paladins Working Together? by Meriadoc, the expert conjurer Chatelaine, trainer of the Paladins, has reported a massive turnaround in the necromancer population. Necromancers and paladins have been seen working together at the orphanage to help the children. I personally even saw one of the Dread Lords of the Dark Arts giving free advice to a newbie! To get to the bottom of what was REALLY going on, I risked life and limb among the orcs of Dalair to get to and interview the Master Necromancer, only to find a note: "I'm not in right now, sorry. Have a nice day." What? Does he not hate me? Is he not going to come out of nowhere and make me into a will o'wisp? I finally found a necromancer who would tell me what was happening. "We're really just bored," he said. "I can kill Razar with my eyes closed and annihilate Hawkeye with my left pinkie. What's left for us to do?" Personally, I suspected eventually they would get bored of this, too, and just kill everyone. Local News continued on page 5 ... --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Volume 7.0 10 Ansmonth, 559 Page 5 --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Local News continued from page 4 ... "Pretty soon we'll get bored of this, too, and most likely kill everyone," said my source. So who is benefitting from this freakishly bizarre turn of events? The NPCs, of course! Says Iannis: "I just don't know what to do with myself, now that I don't spend my days dying and being made into an undead. I kinda miss it." Prissy was noted to have said, "My Daddykins could kill puny necromancers in his sleep! Who cares what they do?" The alchemist in Dalair has closed up his shop for a while. "It really sucks that they're not out doing their job," he told me. "Without the necromancers to keep them in check, the Knights are spawning all over the place." Dawg, who originally created the necromancers, commented: "This must be a bug." To get a more sophisticated opinion, I decided to talk with Blor about these recent developments. Here is the transcription: Mer: It's nice of you to agree to an interview. I'm sure the readers of the Canticle will be eager to hear what you have to say. Blor: You worthless scum. Leave. Mer: So, do you think that this bizarre change in the necromancers' activities will have any direct effect on your life? Blor: I am the leader here. Mer: I see. My next question is... Blor: Get out. As you can see, many of Anguish's NPCs are quite useless to speak to. Whatever you think about these events, all I have to say is... BLOOD AND SOULS FOR MY MASTER STREAK! --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Volume 7.0 10 Ansmonth, 559 Page 6 --------------------------------------------------------------------------- First Wolves, Now Dragons - Beast Problems In The Common Church Wolves and dogs wandering around the Common Church in Tantallon are no news to the clerics working there. These canines are usually friendly, albeit somewhat noisy, and judging by their lack of fear for humans, they seem to be abandoned or runaway pets of rangers. The condition of the foresters' companions feeling drawn to the church varies greatly, however, and every now and then the staff and guests have to deal with starving or otherwise badly ill-treated, angry beasts who start attacking people in the holy place. "It's especially bad since the wolves seem to instinctively prey on the weakest and youngest people, who mostly have come here to seek refuge, trying to /avoid/ becoming the long-waited breakfast for a feral beast," sighs one of the healers on-duty in the Church. "We who spend a lot of time here, contemplating and tending to the sick and wounded, instead of pursuing the more aggressive way of life of our warrior-priest colleagues, are thus usually the least fit to engage in a brawl with these beasts, and the Church is small enough that after you've delivered one blow with the help of gods, the wolf is already coming for your throat." It's not just wolves the clerics must deal with. One day, an adventurer appeared carrying something big and somewhat round with her. It turned out to be the egg of a dragon, and the little one decided to hatch just then and there. "Whoever says all creatures are cute when they're born, they haven't seen that one," remarked a cleric. "It was all claws and teeth even when it was just out of the egg, and more than able to defend itself." It attacked the adventurer first, who was forced to retreat and flee. Then the baby dragon proceeded to attack a recently reincarnated young citizen and another person who showed up out of nowhere and ended up as a corpse on the church floor. The clerics' frantic cries of help were at this point met by a dark-clad female with an undead companion, and the pair swiftly ended the killing spree of the little dragon. Apparently, the clerics on duty were further shaken by the way the servant of Chaos "disposed of" the corpse. The aforementioned casualty was later noticed to not have died by the dragon's claws. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Volume 7.0 10 Ansmonth, 559 Page 7 --------------------------------------------------------------------------- _ _\ /_ >_X_< .---._ /_\ _.---. /`.---._`{/ \}`_.---.`\ | / ___`{\_/}`___ \ | \ \."`* `"{_}"` *`"./ / \ \ )\ _\ /_ /( / / \ *<()( >_X_< )()>* / |._)/._./_\._.\(_.| _____ jgs|() () () () () ()| _____ ( ___ ) ( ___ ) | / | | \ | | / | ROYAL DECLARATION | \ | | / | | \ | | / | His Majesty, King Drin of Anguish has made the following | \ | | / | proclamation: | \ | | / | | \ | | / | We are concerned about the widespread use of mind-altering | \ | | / | substances in Our lands. | \ | | / | | \ | | / | We have therefore decided to make unauthorized cultivation, | \ | | / | possession or use of the substance known as 'whiteleaf' a | \ | | / | punishable offense. | \ | | / | | \ | | / | We have also dispatched agents responsible for collecting | \ | | / | 'whiteleaf'. You see, I have never been too good at algebra, and now, just as my teacher said it would, it is coming back to haunt me. I just can't figure out the system used with shifters! Oh, sure, now, when I'm faced with this 'real life' situation, I wish that I had paid attention. *sigh* I've had people try to explain it to me. This is how I understand it: I start out as an oppossum. To get to be a flower, kitten, or chameleon, I need to learn up to a medium-sized opossum. To get to boulder, I also have to get my frog to medium-size. Eh, that's not too bad. I can understand that much. But then trees, panthers and nelitos come into play. So... how do I get those? You need to get to level three in flower, kitten, or chameleon, respectively, to get a level one in these higher level shapes. But then someone tells me that to get to level three as a tree, panther, or nelitos, I need to go back to flower, kitten, or chameleon (again, respectively), and raise it to level five. Uhhgg... that's when my head started to hurt. But it goes further... to get to a treant, xaerre, or drakon, I have to get to medium level in tree, panther, or nelitos. But to get to medium level in treant, xaerre, or drakon, I need to go back again and raise tree, panther, or nelitos to the highest level. Am I right, or even less intelligent than I thought? I conclude that either Paldin is a smarter man than I, or he is severly disturbed. Or both. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Volume 7.0 10 Ansmonth, 559 Page 10 --------------------------------------------------------------------------- You Know You Are Addicted to Ancient Anguish When... **************************************************** * IRL, you refer to AA as 'IRL'. * You read the Canticle daily, but would never watch the news. * CX runs become your full-time job. * You wonder what level your cat is. * You ask for the exchange rate from the local currency to GP. * You start typing ' before every line on other chat networks. * You find yourself saying "ack" in public. * You make a list of "You know you're addicted to AA when..."'s. * You make your RL friends find you in AA if they want to hang out. * You get an insatiable urge to lick people you haven't seen in a while. * You turn down going somewhere with the opposite sex because you're, uh, busy... doing... work.., yeah, work. * Your character gets more food and sleep than you do. * You notice it's raining and deduce that many rangers and Shifter flowers must be around. * You attempt to rent a room for "just two minutes". * You celebrate your birthday party on AA. A log of the events can, as usual, be found at the Nominations board upstairs the Tantallon Town Hall. Here is Fir's tight wrap-up of the things brought up. Clerics: Wowies suggested a cleric prayer for "protection from opposite alignment", which would reduce damage by a smallish percentage. He also recited a suggestion for four gods for the clerics, and added that while he disagreed with dividing clerical prayers into groups, he thought making halls for the different gods would be a nice improvement for the current, rather boring cleric hall. Paldin noted that World might disagree with the number of gods. Wowies also noted that 'cure' still gives nothing but an "Ok." for success, and suggested that after praying various protections on himself he should be able to see the strange glows in his description.[1] Mages: A mage update project referred to as "Manspider spells" was noted to be close to getting into the game, and just waiting for getting things sorted out with Balance. Wynlan reported that magic missile worked fine underwater while sounding much like a fiery spell. Paldin would look into it, possibly by just fixing the messages. ... Mortal Council News continued on page 12 --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Volume 7.0 10 Ansmonth, 559 Page 12 --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Mortal Council News, continued from page 11 ... Necromancers: More good+ kills were hoped for. Paldin commented that it was common that people tend to prefer to code big, bad NPCs, which meant that the best way of getting more good kills for necromancers would probably be by getting more necromantic wizards. Recoding quests so that there would be an "evil" way of finishing them as well was brought up by Blain. Scarecrazy noted that as getting old quests changed might well take forever and a half, she figured QC could be encouraged to encourage wizards to make their new quests allow for an evil solution as well. Tasha recited a suggestion for being able to nickname your undead. As the suggestion was sort of boiled down to solving problems caused by having two of the "same" undead in a room, a 'give <item> to my <undead>' was suggested. Adinos would look into it. Tasha also suggested a bonus to undeads which were using the weapons they used when still alive. Paldin pondered making them a bit poorer using weapons different from the ones they were "used to". Wynlan asked for goblins to be made raisable from the dead, since they were humanoid, after all. Rangers: Statusquo suggested enabling rangers to make harder armour and their own medicinals. Adinos commented that he could imagine a mage and a ranger cooperating to reinforce ranger-made armour. Discussion about enchantments ensued, but the project did not seem to be picked up by anyone. Kaylar noted that you could give things to wolves in the Star Caverns and then tame them, and suggested that wolves be forced to "drop all" when tamed. After some general discussion on whether wolves should be able to carry things in general, Paldin promised to look into the Star Caverns canines. Kaylar also noted rangers were hoping for "doggie saddle bags". The suggestion went through a few mutations and ended up in a no. Adinos noted that there were several ranger-related changes in the QC approval queue and he wouldn't look at more changes to ranger code before they were tested and in the game. Bridge building was mentioned, but the wizard working on it was noted to have gone missing in action. Mortal Council News continued on page 13 ... --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Volume 7.0 10 Ansmonth, 559 Page 13 --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Mortal Council News, continued from page 12 ... Wowies reported that if a hungry wolf is released and tamed again, it forgets it was hungry. Paldin called this a feature. Ebot suggested that rangers should be able to make low skill weapons with wood and flint, including thrown ones. Adinos noted that something like the former was already in the approval queue, and would look at thrown weapons after some revisions to "cut" got through approval first. Paladins: Scarecrazy encouraged everyone to mail her about ideas for new paladin missions. Rog- The Other Class: Statusquo reported that quitting out while concealing an item would make the item disappear. It would also not be automatically sold the normal way when 'idling out'. Adinos would look into it. Macavity promised to look into rogues having problems "closely following" speedwalking marks, which Statusquo reported. Paldin considered increasing the penalty of speedwalking some more, but was not too convinced it would help much. Statusquo brought up making the rogues' poisoning ability to be given some use beyond just PK by adding powders and oils which would have different effects when items were poisoned by them. He also suggested an item which would give a bonus to dispossession. Adinos noted that something like that was in the works. Statusquo's remaining list of rogue suggestions included adding colour to ccards, disabling idle and linkdead statues from catching rogues (which enables them to act as a witness) and coding "rogue missions", making a rogue use his/her abilities to gain experience or money. The latter had been talked about earlier, but Adinos and Paldin didn't remember anyone having picked the project up. Tarott noted that switching to a backstabbing weapon while brawling stopped working when brawl was updated to not be a weapon anymore. Paldin would look into this, and he wondered if brawl should even be made the default unarmed attack. Adinos noted that this was not the first thing about the new brawling waiting to be fixed. The wizard behind the new brawling has gone missing. Mortal Council News continued on page 14 ... --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Volume 7.0 10 Ansmonth, 559 Page 14 --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Mortal Council News, continued from page 13 ... Shapeshifters: Wowies suggested that blacksmiths should be able to resize armour to fit on a xaerre. Discussion about xaerre clothing followed.[2] Various: Blain reported that a set of stealth-affecting claws could leave behind a "stealth 0" ability when taken off instead of removing the ability from the list when it doesn't have any value. Macavity would look into it. Kaylar reported that setting your defence to block prior to joining a class which did not allow blocking sometimes allowed you to keep blocking afterwards. Macavity noted that such blocking did not actually have any effect. Kaylar also brought up ghost-related issues. You could run around while being a ghost and fall down from exhaustion immediately after praying. You could also withdraw money while being a ghost, which could be used for talking Brog into partial forgiveness after having been killed once. Adinos would fix the latter. Wowies reported that the mountain orc guards would act interestingly when a necromancer cast warts on them. Paldin would look into it. On a sidetrack, Adinos let slip that 'sell all from <container>' was being worked on. Statusquo recited a suggestion about petty theft bounties (1k reward) being changed into a prison sentence as bounty hunters did not consider them worth the bother. Adinos mentioned that theft bounties were about to become issued more or less by an NPC, without requiring direct intervention by Law. Statusquo brought up the suggestion of tossing an item into an adjanced room. He specified that he was mostly thinking about tossing around light sources. He also suggested a sort of "umbrella" for smokers, allowing them to smoke a pipe even if it was raining. Adinos commented that pipes going out in rain was actually just a side effect of the code making them go out underwater, and added a rainproof pipe on his to-do list. Kaylar suggested changing the roofs for stats. The suggestion was at least interpreted as converting one stat for another, and hence met with a 'no' since most classes have some stat which they hardly use and would probably use for just maximizing their "primary" stat. Digester's notes: [1] A quick fix for the clerical 'cure' was submitted afterwards by Scarecrazy. Adding the protective auras to a player's description would unfortunately require a somewhat larger rewrite, as simple as the fix might sound. Brought up subjects included trade routes, player-owned houses, having less weight on combat as a way of life, legal duels and PK code, Halloween activity, the role of Adventurers, "the Drowgar spell project's" status, CX limitations, clans, various clarifications to the game rules including the corpse looting rules and hit'n'run archery, quests and exploration points on the way of wizzing, the state of the AA web site and plans of adding new mortal levels to follow the 19th.
